To Spend, or Not to Spend, for Valentine’s Day…

The back-and-forth ritual of plucking petals out of a flower, saying, “…loves me, loves me not” rings true this Valentine’s Day. That’s because of widely differing reports of how much (or how little) consumers may be willing to spend on their February 14th celebrations.

For this blog, let us alter the “loves me, loves me not” phrase above to ‘loves to spend’ and ‘do not love to spend’ consumer sections.

 ‘Loves to Spend’ Consumers

On the optimistic outlook, National Retail Federation (NRF) reports that 2026 may be a record year for Valentine’s Day sales, with consumers spending an average of $199.78. (Last year, this figure was $188.81.) Unsurprisingly, should this prediction come true, the bulk of this spending will be from middle- and high-income earning consumers. The potential increase may also be attributed to a growing trend among shoppers who plan to give Valentine’s Day gifts not only to spouses or significant others but to friends, co-workers, and even pets.

While the above findings look promising, brands and merchants should not get too optimistic…

‘Do Not Love to Spend’ Consumers

Contradicting the findings from the NRF, a commentary in Media Post states that most consumers will spend conservatively on Valentine’s Day purchases. In sharp contrast to the figures above, the predicted total for how much money may be spent on February 14th is approximately $105 per consumer. (This would be a 36 percent decrease from last year.) The uncertain economy is without question motivation for many people to scale back on their Valentine’s Day budgets. Back-to-basic at-home celebrations is a dominant trend this year among cost-conscious consumers in love.

So, with such a wide gap of opinion, how can brands and merchants find a middle ground to make the most of Valentine’s Day sales?

Showing Love to Customers

Considering the economic times of today, most businesses would be wise to take a cautious (not necessarily conservative) approach to Valentine’s Day marketing. Businesses that ran exclusive deals during the winter holiday shopping season can apply similar strategies during the upcoming week. For example:

1. Exclusive Valentine’s Day Value Deals

These may range from special ‘Under $50’ gift sets to a romantic evening at a popular restaurant that either offers a discount or a ‘2-for-1 dinner.’ Possibilities like these may encourage even the most frugal-minded consumers to spend money on Valentine’s Day.

2. Extra Embraces to the Online Experience

The deals mentioned above may also be applied to e-Commerce stores. Whether customers choose discounted items or specialized gift cards, among other options, e-Commerce establishments can sweeten their Valentine’s Day deals even further by offering free shipping on final purchases.

3. Other Ways to Show Love in Mid-February

As observed earlier, middle- and high-income earning customers are giving Valentine’s Day gifts to friends, co-workers, and pets. Brick-and-mortar and e-Commerce stores should therefore think beyond ‘couples only’ and promote ‘Galentine’s Day’ (February 13th) or ‘Singles Awareness Day (February 15th) deals. In connection with this, Media Post article notes that many people are buying Valentine’s Day gifts for themselves.

As a side note, this well-known brand is promoting a Valentine’s Deal that will appeal to all. (And it will appeal to cost-conscious customers!)

McDonald’s Leads Valentine’s Day Love by Example

The iconic fast-food brand presents a special treat for this holiday of love. Partnering with Long Island City-based gourmet shop Paramount Caviar, McDonald’s is releasing ‘McNugget® Caviar kits.’ For a limited time, orders of Chicken McNuggets® will be paired with tins of Bieri Sturgeon caviar to create an appetizer fitting for Valentine’s Day.
