By Jonathan Baker With AI Overviews and evolving search experiences reshaping Google results, many brands have seen a steady decline in organic traffic. It’s easy to assume traditional search text ads might fade into the background as well. Recent findings suggest the opposite. A study highlighted in Search Engine Journal by international SEO and AI search consultant Aleyda Solis analyzed search behavior from January 2025 through early 2026. The goal: Identify which search features were contributing most to declining organic clicks. The results were revealing. What the Study Examined Four consumer verticals were analyzed: Headphones Jeans Online games Greeting cards The study evaluated classic organic listings, AI Overviews, Product Listing Ads (PLAs), paid search text ads, and zero-click behavior. Significantly, while AI-generated summaries clearly played a role in reducing organic clicks, they weren’t the only factor. Text Ads Gained Significant Click Share Across all four verticals, paid search text ads gained between 7 and 13 percentage points in click share. In other words, as organic results lost visibility and engagement, paid placements absorbed more user attention. This doesn’t necessarily mean users prefer ads. It reflects a broader shift in how Google structures its search results pages (SERPs). Paid listings continue to appear prominently— often at the top of the page—to capture high-intent traffic that once flowed primarily to organic listings. For advertisers, this is an important signal. What This Means for Brands The Opportunity… Greater visibility in high-intent searchesUsers searching for products like headphones or jeans are often ready to buy. Increased paid click share means brands can capture that demand more directly. Ability to offset organic declineAs organic traffic becomes less predictable, paid search offers a controllable and measurable way to maintain search presence. Strategic positioningBrands that actively manage and optimize search campaigns can secure premium visibility, even as search behavior evolves. A Note of Caution… Higher click share, however, does not automatically translate to higher profitability. Auction pressure remains real. Competitive industries can drive up cost-per-click (CPC) when multiple advertisers pursue the same audience. Click-through rates (CTR) may fluctuate. Even if paid placements gain more overall clicks, impressions may grow faster than engagement. Efficiency matters more than ever. Without careful oversight, increased spend can erode return on ad spend (ROAS). The takeaway isn’t simply “invest more in paid search.” It’s “invest smarter.” Key Metrics to Watch As search dynamics shift, advertisers should focus closely on: Cost-per-click (CPC) Conversion rate Return on ad spend (ROAS) Impression share and click share Regular performance reviews and testing (creative, bidding strategies, audience targeting) are essential to maintaining efficiency. The Bigger Picture Search is no longer a simple balance between organic listings and ads. AI-generated results, evolving SERP layouts, and zero-click behavior are redefining visibility. The above study reinforces how paid search (particularly text-based search ads) is far from outdated. In fact, it’s becoming a primary lever for capturing demand in competitive markets. For brand owners and advertisers, the message is clear: Organic strategy remains important, but paid search is playing a growing role in protecting and expanding market share. The brands that adapt quickly by monitoring performance carefully and optimizing continuously will be best positioned to win in today’s evolving search landscape.
