Show Some Love on Small Business Saturday
That day of year where shoppers will show some love to their local businesses is coming up. On November 26, local and independent businesses will open their stores, shops, or online marketplaces in celebration of Small Business Saturday. As the restrictions that were in place due to COVID-19 have been lifted, Small Business Saturday 2022 will be a year to remember with interesting new features. (Spoiler alert: TikTok fans should sit up and take notice.)
A shopping day to benefit businesses and shoppers
If you operate a small business and accept American Express® (AMEX), or you have plans to shop on November 26 day, this AMEX-sponsored event has a great deal in store (no pun intended).
- Business owners: Make sure everything is in place and ready so that you can provide a warm, personalized welcome to customers. You can find additional information and resources, including promotional materials to download which will let your neighbors know that you are a Small Business Saturday place of business.
- Shoppers: This is the day where you can truly make a difference by practicing the two-word phrase you’ll see at establishments around your neighborhoods: SHOP SMALL®. (If you aren’t sure which businesses in your neighborhood are participating, here is a map you can search.)
If you are wondering how this makes a difference, some history is in order…
The history of celebrating local businesses and their neighboring supporters
Everyone remembers the Great Recession of 2008—particularly anyone who owned a local business. To show support, American Express® and the National Trust for Historic Preservation established Small Business Saturday in 2010. For the last 12 years, shoppers are encouraged to pass on visiting big box stores for one day of the year and instead browse and buy from merchants within their own hometowns.
The benefits of shopping local on Small Business Saturday
Whether shoppers choose to buy basics such as soap and toothpaste from a nearby pharmacy, purchase clothes at a local haberdasher, or dine out at a neighborhood restaurant, they are contributing to the prosperity of their communities. With more places having reopened, this year’s Small Business Saturday will be as much a social event as it is a shopping event. And speaking of social…
Yes, TikTok is getting into the act
This year, social media sensation TikTok is helping to promote Small Business Saturday via #ShopSmall Accelerator, an innovate feature to help local businesses stand out—as well as connect with new customers. As explained in Business Wire, the purpose of #ShopSmall Accelerator is to help small business owners “think like TikTok creators.” Through this resource, small business owners can get advice and have access to tools that will enable them to make a splash via TikTok. (Among the perks is a $100 TikTok advertising credit offer.) Complementing TikTok’s presence and promotion of Small Business Saturday is soundtrack by Chlöe Bailey, which business owners can use to enhance their presence.
Numbers to acknowledge
According to statistics from Bankrate, last year, 51 million shoppers throughout the United States participated in Small Business Saturday and spent over $20 million on purchases. Will those numbers—both in shoppers and dollar amount—be surpassed in 2022? It’s very possible: Recent studies show that a lot of consumers have taken a newfound interest in small-to-midsized businesses this year—even if it means paying a little extra.
