By Jonathan Baker (Contributor: Sydney Donovan, EGC’s Director of PR) Today, brands have their attention on everything from keeping up with fast-changing technology to the uncertain economy. They may be overlooking an unrealized opportunity to increase visibility—and sales. This opportunity is podcast advertising. A Brief History People have been listening to podcasts since 2004—accompanied by ads. These ads were either recorded directly into the audio files or read live by the respective podcast hosts. This was a novel strategy to help creators monetize content and brands make their presence known. The popularity of podcasts increased over time. And recent findings show that advertising via podcast is beyond popular. Podcast Ads Take the Lead A recent report in e-Marketer (Podcast ads prove most powerful at driving action over other mediums; August 11, 2025) claims that podcast advertising has emerged as the leading medium for encouraging listeners (read: consumers) to purchase. Image Credit: e-Marketer For podcasts to be in first place in the graph above is a testament to their popularity, especially as it is among iconic social media platforms and innovative streaming service technology. What accounts for the popularity of podcasts—and by extension—the effectiveness of advertising on this medium? Rising Number of Listeners and High Engagement Currently, 41 percent of the population throughout the nation listen to podcasts. This figure is projected to reach 44 percent within three years. People seeking audio are gradually tuning out radios in favor of podcasts. Complementing these findings, nearly 55 percent of listeners are highly engaged, as they listen to podcasts for about six hours each week. The more time people spend listening to podcasts means they get more exposure to brand messages via ads. And podcast ads are indeed making an impression. Listeners Purchase—Fast As the graph shows, 22 percent of listeners have made a purchase after having heard an ad on their podcasts of choice. While that is not an overwhelming percentage, e-Marketer points out that these were immediate purchases. This makes for a short customer journey from ‘consideration’ point to ‘purchase’ point. Spreads the Word About Brands on Social Media As ad content plays or is read during a podcast, the promoted brand’s social media pages are frequently mentioned. This leads listeners to check out more details about the brand and its products or services. So, not only is the brand highlighted, but its social media presence gets a shout out, resulting in a ripple effect of awareness and visibility. Listeners Want to Learn More Those who don’t make an immediate purchases after hearing a podcast ad nevertheless become curious about the promoted brand. A statistic cited in e-Marketer notes that 27 percent of listeners become motivated to seek more information about a brand after hearing the ad. In short, these listeners might never have known about this brand if it weren’t for a podcast. Final Note About a Select Audience One audience that has a particular appreciation for podcasts is the young but powerful age group, Generation Z.
