Long Island SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders)

Challenge: The Long Island GLBT Services Network provides a home and safe space for the Long Island's GLBT community. Among their five organizations is SAGE-LI. It provides GLBT seniors with social support and many vital services. While there has been a demonstrable increase in GLBT advocacy and a growing acceptance of the overall community, seniors often feel sidelined. They grew up in an age of fear and secrecy and today they still face some of those attitudes. Also, GLBT seniors are less likely to have a strong family network to help with basic tasks such as shopping, getting to doctors, etc. There is a lack of awareness of these issues. The challenge was to raise awareness and increase funding to the organization.
