The Future is in 3D

Q: What do Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, How to Train your Dragon, NHL Hockey, NFL Football and Nintendo DS all have in common?

A: They all can be seen in 3D, and are a sneak peak into the future.

3D has been the rising star in the technology world with its ability to bring 2D screen images to life in a 3rd dimension, making them more realistic and life-like. Watching any of the items above you are made to feel as if you’re a part of the movie, rather than just sitting and watching a  screen as an inactive participant. Beyond uses in entertainment, 3D is also opening up a whole new realm of opportunities for advertisers to engage their audience.

The real question when it comes to 3D is whether there will be mass adoption of the technology. Samsung will be incorporating the technology in many of their televisions going forward. More programming and events will be filmed and aired in 3D. However, there are drawbacks to 3D that must be addressed before there can be mass adoption. When you sit in a movie for an extended period of time, you may notice that you get a headache. But imagine watching TV or viewing a sports event. It could cause problems– problems that were actually noted by Samsung on their website including the fact that watching the TV could have health ramifications.

Regardless, 3D is a technology that will continue to be developed and integrated into our everyday lives.  I would not be surprised if all our TVs are 3D capable within a year or two. Then the next wave will be mobile devices going 3D.  Stay tuned!
